Counter Skills Competition

HITCHIN RETAIL AND SERVICE EMPLOYEES INVITED TO ENTER COMPETITION TO WIN £1000!

People working in shops and services in Hitchin are being invited to enter Counter Skills; a competition to find the most skilled retailer and the most promising newcomer to the sector.

Hitchin Initiative, in association with Retail Revival Ltd., today (April 29th) launched the Competition for non-managerial employees of any age, and with any level of experience working in shops or service providers in Hitchin.

“Retail plays a vital contribution to the social and economic wellbeing of towns and cities”, explains Sally Williams, Managing Director of Retail Revival Ltd.  “A strong retail offer relies on highly skilled and motivated staff, yet far from being an easy occupation; retail is one of the most difficult jobs to do well. Counter Skills provides a platform for people working in the sector to demonstrate their considerable ability. It also raises the profile of local retailers and encourages people to shop in the town.”

Counter Skills: Hitchin takes place from 17th to 28th May 2010. Competitors will be timetabled to complete seven separate tasks over the competition period. It requires less than a three-hour commitment over two weeks and it is free to enter.
The tasks each last 30 minutes and in total they test 51 skills and areas of knowledge and aptitude. Amongst other things competitors will need to serve a mystery shopper to demonstrate their customer service ability, demonstrate one of their favourite products or services to a Counter Skills Judge, count money and complete an attractive display of merchandise.

The overall winner will receive a cheque for £1000 but there are several other prizes up for grabs. Keith Hoskins, Hitchin Town Centre Manager, urges local businesses to put their staff forward, “This is a fun and informal competition, there are awards for the most promising newcomer and for each of the task winners - nobody should feel daunted about entering. Winners will be announced during a high profile awards ceremony in June, where sponsors and colleagues of every contestant will be invited to join them for an evening of celebration and networking.”

People wishing to participate in Counter Skills are invited to apply for further information from Sally Williams, telephone 01442 401440/07889 173 101 or visit the Hitchin Initiative Office at 27 Churchyard for an entry form.
